Workshop on STEM Education
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
A workshop on STEM Education was organised on 6th July, 2019 in the school auditorium. The resource persons were Dr. Amitabh Sharma and Deepti Agarwal who made the sessions interactive and interesting. 54 teachers participated in the workshop from various schools in Delhi and NCR.
Dr. Amitabh Sharma organised few innovative activities for instance: building a lung model, creating a pollution mask and also an electrical circuit. These activities were undertaken to make us understand the importance of including STEM in the curriculum and easing the understanding of the concepts mentioned in the textbooks. The pollution masks created by the participants were even tested against smoke and dust. Another interesting activity was the designing of helmets and testing it by dropping it from different heights. Thus the practical aspects of the concepts in science were diligently discussed as well as demonstrated.
Our students are already getting practical knowledge through the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL). We plan to further integrate the ATL with STEM methodology and give our students a practical overview of all theoretical concepts. It will help to create an innovative teaching, learning and assessment environment. This would further enable them to become critical thinkers. We plan to introduce Environmental issues and ask students to find out solutions for those. Such activities will be introduced to create critical thinking among students and also make them a problem solver.
Our school is already working on activities based teaching, but STEM gives us idea to mix various concepts of different subjects together to come out with something useful and new. Our labs are also in association with Atal Tinkering lab which is giving exposure to students about new technologies and their implementations.

For Fostering scientific learning in childhood active hands-on approach is very important. What would be more creative than science and what better way to explore science than by working with student’s own innate creativity.
The workshops are the juncture of sharing knowledge, expressing ideas and problem solving. To make learning of physics more interesting and easy through a variety of simple yet concept driven experiments, a week-long physics workshop was conducted by our school in conjuction with Innovation lab “Atal Tinkering lab”, from 6thto 10th August 2018 for classes I to X.
Mr. Ashwini kumar the resource person in association with our Science teachers introduced various innovative methods of learning different concepts of physics in a fun-filled manner.
During the workshops all students were provided the access to materials by the school and were effectively guided to perform various experiments.
Students of classes I and II learnt the relation between light and shadow by making shadow images on the chart papers stuck on the walls.
Class III students prepared a working model of Solar and Lunar eclipse and understood the difference between the two eclipses and how they are caused.
Kaleidoscopes using mirror strips were formed by the students of class IV. They understood how the combination of mirrors could form multiple images and how beautifully they combine. This activity helped in enriching their knowledge about the light mirror and reflections.
To make students understood the concept of illusion students of class IV and V made two separate pictures and learned how the two can be combined in single image by varying the speed. This helped them to learn how persistence of vision can create illusion.
Similarly students of class VI created a magic box which helped them to understand how positioning of mirror at different angles creates illusion.
In order to make the students of class VII understand the concept of light and refraction, they were guided to make a 3D hologram. Students were amazed to know how light can convert 2D objects into 3D.
Using the concept of multiple reflection class VIII students formed an infinite magic tunnel. They learned how reflection can create illusion.
To provide the students the real life experience and enhance their conceptual knowledge students of class IX to X created magic box and magic tap respectively. They learned in a fun-filled manner that illusion can be created by refraction.
The objective of the entire workshop was to enhance their conceptual knowledge by giving them practical exposure which was effectively achieved.
